When students embark on the University of Florida’s study abroad programs, they’re looking for more than just academic credits; they’re in pursuit of a horizon-broadening experience. Regina Azua Ross, one of the vibrant participants in the UF in Sevilla summer program, found exactly that—a transformative adventure that transcended the traditional classroom walls.
Regina recalls, “Participating in the UF in Sevilla program was a truly life-changing experience.” The program’s immersive classes dove deep into the heart of Seville’s storied history, while the city itself became a living classroom. It wasn’t just about learning the past; it was about stepping into it, walking the cobblestone streets, and feeling the pulse of the city’s vibrant culture.
With weekend excursions to cities like Malaga, Regina and her cohort had the chance to absorb the rich tapestry of Southern Spain’s culture, history, and, yes, its delectable cuisine. “My favorite excursion was to Malaga, because of the incredible beaches, amazing food, and nice people,” she says with enthusiasm. These trips weren’t merely sightseeing; they were bonding experiences, turning groups of students into tightly knit circles of friends.
A highlight of Regina’s study was the Flamenco class. “It was loads of fun,” she says, with a recollection that sparkles with the joy of music and dance. “By the end of the semester, we had a whole mini choreography done.” This was a place where laughter mixed with learning, as students tried, faltered, and ultimately succeeded in mastering the dance’s basic steps.
The cosumbrismo class brought another dimension to her studies, offering insights into Spanish culture through literature, art, and film. Regina found the materials not just educational but “actually very funny,” which contributed to an enjoyable class atmosphere.
But it’s the personal growth that stands out in her memory. The program fostered independence, cultural immersion, and friendships that withstand the test of distance and time. “I met some of my closest friends, learned a lot about myself, and became more independent,” Regina shares. Her experience is a testament to the invaluable life lessons that come from studying abroad—lessons in self-reliance, cultural understanding, and the creation of international friendships.
As we recount stories like Regina’s, we’re reminded of the profound impact that these experiences have on our students. They return not just with souvenirs, but with skills, memories, and relationships that enrich their lives and the lives of those around them. As UF looks to the future, we are inspired by our students’ journeys and are eager to continue fostering these opportunities for discovery and growth. After all, the world is the greatest classroom we have.
