Crystal Marull (Senior Lecturer) and Diego Pascual y Cabo (Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics) received the CLAS Teaching Award. These awards are intended to encourage and reward excellence, innovation, and effectiveness in teaching or mentoring.
Jorge Valdés Kroff (Associate Professor of Hispanic Linguistics) has been named a University of Florida Term Professor, 2021-2024. He has also accepted an Associate Editor position for the peer-review journal, Applied Psycholinguistics.

On October 29, Allen Zegarra Acevedo delivered a presentation at the Midwest Association of Latin American Studies (MALAS) 71st Annual Conference entitled “Re-building Latin America in the Covid-19 Era: Emerging Crisis, Activism and National Policy Implications.” His presentation “Nuestros Indios: una vision inclusiva de Manuel González Prada” was awarded second place for best graduate student paper.
PhD candidate Diana Velázquez López won the 2021 Duolingo Dissertation Grant in Language Learning with Technology to support her research. Diana’s dissertation explores how computer-mediated feedback can help Spanish learners with their pronunciation.
Related to her dissertation topic, Diana and Gillian Lord, Professor of Hispanic Linguistics, recently published “5 Things to Know About Teaching Pronunciation with Technology” in the CALICO InfoBytes series.
PhD student Marc Gandarillas received a Certificate of Outstanding Merit from CLAS and UFIC during the 27th Annual International Student Achievement Awards ceremony on November 16. The Certificate of Outstanding Merit recognizes the exceptional contributions of an international student to UF. Colleges consider not just academic achievements, but also other ways in which this student has distinguished themselves, made a substantial impact, and contributed to UF’s international profile and engagement.
PhD student María Hernández González has been awarded a CLAS Dissertation Fellowship. Hernández-González’ dissertation explores how, in the Mexican context of the 20th and 21st centuries, the cultural face of oil technologies has influenced everything from a novel to a public monument to folkloric projects like a governmentally sponsored dance troupe and a bead-covered car.
PhD student Grisell Santiago has been elected secretary of the ACTFL Special Interest Group “Teaching and Learning of Culture.”
