This semester, three students from the Portuguese program are pursuing internships in two organizations that impact various Portuguese-speaking communities in the USA and abroad.
Under the supervision of Prof. Andréa Ferreira, István Kérészy and Roberto Ferrer are working at AcheiUSA, the largest newspaper and website for the Brazilian community in Florida since 2000. István Kerészy is a Ph.D. candidate in Physics, and is a two-time FLAS-recipient and veteran of our UF-in-Rio program. Roberto Ferrer is a Criminology major, with Portuguese and Latin American Studies minors, and is a lover of soccer and endangered animals, and a Brazil enthusiast.

Ikrom Alajoulim, supervised by Dr. M. Elizabeth Ginway, is currently collaborating with RioOnWatch, an NGO founded by Dr. Theresa Williamson that brings visibility to favela community voices in Rio de Janeiro. Ikrom Alajoulin is a fourth-year Sociology and Criminology student, also pursuing a minor in Portuguese. During the summer of her freshman year, she studied abroad in the Dominican Republic which inspired her to learn about different languages and cultures.
SPS thanks professors Ferreira and Ginway for promoting these experiential learning opportunities in the Portuguese program! For more information about internships in SPS, contact Andrea Ferreira (Portuguese) or Antonio Sajid López Méndez (Spanish).
