Comunidad HOPE, the Gainesville chapter of Healing on Practice Education (HOPE), is a vibrant, student-led organization dedicated to serving vulnerable communities in Latin America and Gainesville through healthcare, education, and outreach. While open to all students, the group offers unique opportunities for those pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry and healthcare—as well as for anyone interested in improving their Spanish through real-world service.

Faith and compassion are at the heart of Comunidad HOPE’s mission. Members pray together over clinics and patients, creating a supportive environment where service becomes an act of empathy and connection. The organization provides hands-on medical and dental experience through its annual mission trips to the Dominican Republic, serving communities in Higüey, San Juan, and Santo Domingo. Students gain over 32 hours of practical experience—taking vitals, recording patient histories, assisting in dental cleanings and extractions, and learning medical Spanish alongside local professionals. Beyond clinical work, participants also explore Dominican culture and share moments of rest and reflection on the island’s final day excursion. The next trip is scheduled for Spring Break, March 14–21, 2026.
Locally, Comunidad HOPE partners with organizations in Gainesville to support underserved families through health fairs, food and clothing drives and community outreach events. Looking ahead, the group plans to host clinical workshops, Q&A sessions with medical professionals and volunteer opportunities at Shands, Ronald McDonald House, Grace Marketplace, local churches, and free clinics.
By joining Comunidad HOPE, students become part of a close-knit community that blends faith, service and learning—preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to serve with skill, empathy and love.
