Spanish in the community

On Dec. 3rd, the Spanish in the Community course debuted “_____________,” an oral history project created by Fall 2025 students.

Over the semester, they recorded interviews with second- and third-generation Hispanic community members in Gainesville, who shared cultural, linguistic and civic experiences in thoughtful first-person narratives.

Produced in collaboration with Deborah Hendrix and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program (SPOHP), the project marked the partnership’s 13th consecutive year. Students trained in interviewing ethics and documentation, then captured and archived stories that illuminate Spanish at home, cross-generational identity, and the everyday contributions of Latino families in Florida.
