More than 500 students filled the Rion Ballroom in the Reitz Union this October for the SPS Major Event, transforming the space into a vibrant celebration of Spanish and Portuguese at UF. Under the leadership of Jennifer Wooten, a large team of faculty representing diverse research areas, courses and academic initiatives designed an engaging day that showcased how language, culture, and humanistic perspectives open doors far beyond the classroom.

Students had the opportunity to meet faculty, graduate students and peers while exploring department programs, study abroad opportunities and internships that link Spanish and Portuguese to real-world careers. Interactive tables and hands-on activities encouraged students to reflect on how language and culture shape their personal and professional lives. From writing cheerful messages for Cardz for Kidz to dancing with Gator Salsa, attendees experienced the fun and community spirit that define the department.
Representatives from the International Scholars Program and Career Connections Center also joined the event, helping students visualize how language skills connect to global citizenship and professional success. As the excitement reached its peak, Albert and Alberta made a surprise appearance—reminding everyone that even Gators speak Spanish and Portuguese!
The event fostered a sense of community, curiosity and creativity, illustrating that studying languages is not only about learning vocabulary—it’s about building bridges across cultures, imagining new possibilities and engaging meaningfully with the world.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to everyone who made this celebration possible. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies continues to inspire students to pursue their studies with passion, purpose and a global mindset.
