UF hosted the third edition of the SAnTINA Conference, a virtual multidisciplinary event dedicated to Asturian studies, Nov. 14-16. Organized by UF Professor Immanol Suárez-Palma and Professor Francisco Fernández Rubiera from the University of Central Florida, this year’s conference celebrated the deep connections between Florida and Asturias, Spain.
The conference featured a variety of events, including a live virtual tour of the Centro Asturiano de Tampa and its historical archives, as well as a performance by an Asturian bagpipe band from Oviedo, Florida. The online format allowed for free access to a global audience, enhancing engagement with Asturian culture and language studies.
Sponsored by UF’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, the Center for European Studies, the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, and the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Orlando, the conference continues to strengthen academic ties and cultural appreciation between Florida and Asturias.
We look forward to seeing how the SAnTINA Conference grows and evolves in future editions, furthering the mission of the Asturian Studies Association to promote Asturian culture in North America.
