Celebrating a Distinguished Honor: The Order of Isabella the Catholic

We are thrilled to announce that Sonia San Juan, a member of our academic community, has been awarded the prestigious Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. Established in 1815, this Spanish honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to international relations, fostering peace, culture, and collaboration between Spain and other nations. The official award ceremony took place on November 8, 2024 at Consulado General de España en Miami by Consul General D. Jaime Lacadena.

The Order of Isabella the Catholic is a symbol of Spain’s appreciation for inclusivity and universal values, celebrating figures from diverse backgrounds and professions who have built bridges across cultures. Among the honorees are U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi; Alberto Carvalho, noted for his work in expanding Spanish language programs in Florida; Dr. J. Michael Francis, a history professor and colleague; and John D. Bailey, former mayor of St. Augustine, recognized for his contributions to the city’s historic preservation.”
