Program Spotlight: UF in Rio 2021 (Virtual)

Summer 2021 will mark the 40th year of the UF in Rio de Janeiro program between UF and the Instituto Brasil Estados Unidos (IBEU). Due to the pandemic, our program will be offered online again. This six-week intensive program is aimed at intermediate and advanced students of Portuguese as well as FLAS recipients at the graduate and undergraduate level. The program consists of online language classes in the morning, followed by classes and workshops on Brazilian culture and virtual excursions in the afternoon. This year’s theme is “The Body(ies) in Brazil”. As a means for understanding abstract concepts across cultural boundaries, the body offers a metaphor for diverse and socially relevant understandings of biopolitics and Brazilian culture. Working with practices established by Catalytic Communities and Theresa Williamson, this course also brings together cultural concepts and issues of urban planning, sustainability, and social justice.
