GAINESVILLE, FL – The University of Florida’s Immigration Clinic has been bolstered by the remarkable efforts of two recent graduates from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, Lara Hernandez Tome and Jenny Paola Hincapié Marín. Their linguistic expertise has been pivotal in supporting the legal needs of immigrant communities, under the direction of Juan Caballero.

Lara Hernandez Tome speaks of her impactful work: “Working as a translator and interpreter with the Immigration Clinic, I aid law students in providing support to immigrants with limited resources for their immigration cases. The beginning of the semester seminar at the clinic really opened my eyes to the breadth of the work being done. Getting to know the families and supporting them has been incredibly gratifying. This role has taught me the critical importance of Spanish within our Gainesville community.”

Jenny Paola Hincapié Marín comments on her engagement: “My time at the Immigration Clinic has been exceptionally fulfilling. I’ve engaged closely with the needs of Latinx migrant populations in the U.S., volunteering under the premise that language is key in immigration matters. Ensuring migrants’ access to legal services, their understanding of rights and duties, and effective communication in their new community is essential. It’s an honor to contribute to a team that fervently works to eliminate linguistic barriers.”

Under the guidance of Juan Caballero, the clinic has seen tremendous growth in its ability to serve immigrants through the passionate work of students like Lara and Jenny. The university recognizes and values the contribution of language professionals in legal settings and is committed to the continued success of the Immigration Clinic’s mission.
