Alumni Spotlight: Ifeanyi K. Uwadia’s Journey with the Peace Corps

We are proud to feature the remarkable journey of Ifeanyi K. Uwadia, an esteemed alumna making significant strides in the education sector with the Peace Corps. Ifeanyi embarked on this life-changing path in August, undergoing intensive training before her assignment in Samaná in October. Committed to a minimum of two years, she anticipates completing her service in October 2025.

In Samaná, Dominican Republic, Ifeanyi works at a school serving 50 students in a rural setting, with a primary focus on enhancing literacy levels among the students. The school’s diverse environment, including many Haitian students, has not only enriched the educational experience but also allowed Ifeanyi to significantly improve her Haitian Creole skills.

Ifeanyi credits her studies in Spanish at the University of Florida, particularly the 2022 UF in the Dominican Republic program and courses in Spanish communication and grammar, for providing a solid foundation that eased her transition to working in a Spanish-speaking community. This background improved her grammar, fluency, writing, listening, and understanding, while also offering a rich cultural context that includes local food, music, customs, beliefs, values, and geography — elements she holds dear.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ifeanyi has fostered close relationships with her neighbors, enhancing her community integration. Her proficiency in Spanish has opened doors to exploring the beautiful landscapes of Samaná and engaging deeply with the local culture.

Ifeanyi’s journey is a testament to the power of language education and cultural immersion in bridging communities and fostering understanding. We celebrate her dedication and the impact she is making in the Peace Corps, reminding us of the far-reaching influence our alumni can have across the globe.
