Alumni Spotlight: Alexander Torres (PhD, 2016)

Alexander Torres

This study consists of a critique of the ontological impact of capitalist modernity from the perspective of the Bildungsroman, the baroque ethos and the youth that sought to build a lifeworld based on rock culture. Six contemporary Latin American novels of formation, which draw on the world of rock aesthetics to a greater or lesser extent, are analyzed: two from Mexico (by José Agustín and Luis Humberto Crosthwaite), two from Colombia (by Andrés Caicedo and Efraim Medina Reyes), and two from Argentina (by Mariana Enríquez and Juan Terranova).

In addition to specializing in the Bildungsroman and rock culture in the Latin American context, Alexander Torres’ research focuses on the contemporary literary production of different regions in Latin America, often with young characters who are faced with a disenchanted and hostile world. He is currently interested in analyzing various formations of the sacred in contemporary literature as an alternative to the logic of capitalist ethics. He teaches Spanish, Latin American Studies, Humanities, and Academic Writing at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach.
