Laura Gutiérrez, “Vuelve al Cabaret”: Rethinking the Making and Meanings of Cabaret in Mexican Culture

Laura Gutiérrez is the author of Performing Mexicanidad (U Texas P, 2010), winner of the Annual MLA Prize in U.S. Latina & Latino, Chicana & Chicano Literary & Cultural Studies. She is an Associate Professor in the Performance as Public Practice Program in Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin & Associate Chair of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.

From the lecture abstract: Political cabaret mostly transpires in Mexico city’s nightlife. Its practitioners are mostly left-leaning queer or queer ally performers who use drag culture to critique of normative gender systems…
