Fulbright Canada has named Professor Shifra Armon Research Chair of Society and Culture at the University of Alberta for  fall 2017. Her project is titled “Staging Curiosity: Skepticism, and Science on the Spanish Stage 1650-1750.”

“Staging Curiosity” joins ecofeminists and such cultural historians as Neil Kenny, David Castillo, and Barbara Benedict who trace continuities between Baroque curiosity and the rise of science. Instead of dismissing as anti-scientific the Baroque fascination with natural anomalies, with excess, or with the occult, Dr. Armon sees Baroque curiosity in the trans-Atlantic world as a bridge, a mediator, and an instrument for shaping new publics receptive to a regimen of science and “enlightenment.
